Price review

What to do when a subscription price increases

Most price-rise emails arrive when you are busy. Treat one as a small annual review: what changed, what do you use, and would you start this plan again at the new price?

You do not need to rage-cancel a service because it costs more. But do not let a price-change email become an unread receipt either. Keep the notice long enough to record the old and new price, start date, billing cycle, and cancellation deadline. A plan paid monthly can still be an annual commitment, so read that part twice.

See the yearly difference first

$9.99 to $12.99 looks like a shrug on a monthly receipt. Over a year, it is $36. That number does not tell you to leave; it makes the trade-off honest. Use the calculator if several changes are arriving at once.

Pick the least-annoying answer

Keep

Keep a service if you use it, understand new price, and would buy it again today. Update amount and next renewal date, especially for annual plans.

Downgrade

Look for features you do not use: extra storage, devices, seats, resolution, downloads, or premium tools. Confirm what access changes and when lower price begins.

Pause or rotate

Pause seasonal services such as streaming between shows or a project tool after project ends. Record why and when you will reassess; otherwise a restart becomes another unknown charge.

Replace

Compare total cost, data portability, supported devices, privacy, household needs, and terms—not price alone. A cheap replacement that creates real migration work may not be cheaper.

Cancel

Cancel when current value does not justify current price and no fitting lower tier exists. Use official billing channel, save proof, and note access end. Cancellation may not mean immediate loss of access or a refund.

Three mistakes to avoid

  • Ignoring annual plans. Give them 14–30 days of review time.
  • Accepting temporary offer without a reminder. Log offer-end date and later standard price.
  • Cancelling before data export. Download files, receipts, history, or contacts you need; retention varies by provider.

Make the next review easier

Leave yourself a breadcrumb for next year: record what changed and why you stayed, switched, paused, or left. Cadora tracks the prices and dates you enter; it does not read provider emails or verify a quoted price. It can schedule local reminders and add its own renewal events to Apple Calendar with permission.
